High Shear Colloidal Bentonite Mixing Plant

AMIX provided a high shear colloidal mixing set up to efficiently hydrate the bentonite on-demand. This allowed the Henry Drilling operation to run seamlessly through the harsh winter despite below freezing conditions, reducing the operations cost and manpower required to produce the product.

Project Description:

Our customer was tasked with providing a design solution that would enable the site to properly hydrate the bentonite on-demand, as required. This would allow the operation to run through winter despite freezing conditions, with the intent of reducing the operations cost and manpower required to produce the product. No tanks were required as AMIX’s system worked to shear bentonite to a standard that no longer required the 24hr hydration period before use.

Project Scope:

The Amaruq mine was on an extremely tight schedule and the cement bentonite (CB) mixture, used for the piles, required the bentonite to have 24hrs of hydration before being placed. This was an issue due to the timeline had the team poised to work through harsh winter conditions in Nunavut, requiring the large bentonite storage tanks to be heated.

Pumping of the CB mixture could not take place in the harsh winter conditions because they had to pump 2km in the freezing conditions, the cement bentonite (CB) mixture would freeze.

The Need:

The job had a fast mobilization date and required a high capacity bentonite plant capable of accurately mixing critical components. AMIX Systems designed, manufactured and supplied the Bentonite Grout Plant within an optimal time frame and the Amaruq project scope of work was completed weeks early despite variable delays

The Solution

AMIX Systems was a critical strategic partner in designing and building a custom bentonite plant that exceeded Henry Drilling’s service needs at the Amaruq Mine. The Custom Bentonite  Mixer increased production with mixer capacity of 3 m3  powered by a heavy duty6/3D-MA high-shear colloidal mill. The Bentonite Plant gave Henry Drilling the ability to produce higher more consistent outputs through a range of external operational and weather conditions.

- Micro Ingredient Feeder Powdered Admix
• Gravimetric micro ingredient weighing and metering systems to feed admix into mixer
• 2 ft3 capacity hopper capable of holding 60 lbs of material – Agitation Tank Mods
• Add two-(2) access man-way hatch on side of agitation tank complete with quick release mechanism. This can be used to inspect the inside of the tank, for cleaning and maintenance
